World No Tobacco Day: What action should the Government take?
The government is expected to be heavy handed in its response to the World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) campaign, to be held on Saturday.
Many are calling for the introduction of a total smoking ban in all workplaces in South Africa.
This is because the health ministry in South Africa released a damning report earlier this year which found that South Africa is one of the worst countries in the world for work-related smoking.
In a country of 46 million people, 400 000 people still smoke. The report also found that nearly two million people die prematurely every year as a result of the tobacco smoke they are exposed to.
It is a known fact that more than 90% of deaths from lung cancer and heart disease in South Africa are caused by passive smoking.
WHO: Social smoking is one of the major public health challenges of the 21st century, with between 1.1 and 1.4 billion active and passive smokers worldwide.
Dr Lalane Govender, National Director, Medical Research Council, said that the report has found that South Africa has the second highest rates of adult smoking in the world.
In a country where less than half of the workforce smoke, they are still exposed to a high level of smoke at work.
The report found that of those who smoke, 90% smoke in private, with those being employed in private for instance, to be more at risk of developing cancers than those employed in the public sector.
Job security has been a major concern in South Africa, with studies showing that 43% of workers reported that they have been terminated or refused employment in the last 12 months.
The government has failed to give a valid reason as to why employment of workers in the formal sector has taken such a backseat.
Even in the informal sector, the majority of workers are also exposed to toxic levels of smoke. ac619d1d87
